A sexually transmitted disease (STD) is passed from one person to another during oral, anal or vaginal sex. Sexually transmitted diseases and infections are currently on a record high in the UK. Recent reports suggests that 482,696 people were diagnosed with STDs in the UK in 2009; a 3% rise on the previous year. According to further data from the Health Protection Agency, women aged 19 and men aged between 20 and 23 are most at risk of contracting a sexually transmitted diseases.
STDs can be passed on during vaginal, anal and oral sex, as well as through genital contact with an infected partner. Sexually transmitted infections can cause a great deal of pain and produce unsightly symptoms, which spread easily.
There are different forms of sexually transmitted infections, the most common STDs include;
Chlamydia: this infects the cervix in women and the urethra and rectum in both men and women. Chlamydia often has no symptoms; if left untreated, chlamydia can cause serious problems later in life like many other sexually transmitted diseases. Chlamydia can be easily diagnosed through a simple swab or urine test and treated with antibiotics.
Genital herpes: this is caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). A genital herpes infection usually causes painful ulcers or sores in or around your anus or genital area 4 -7 days after infection occurs. Unlike some sexually transmitted diseases, there is no treatment for genital herpes. Anti-viral tablets such as Valtrex and Famvir can help the outbreak clear up faster and reduce the severity of symptoms.
Gonorrhoea: this STD is caused by bacteria which multiply quickly in moist, warm areas of the body such as the cervix, urethra, mouth, or rectum. If left untreated, it can lead to infertility. As with most sexually transmitted infections, gonorrhoea can be treated with antibiotics.
Syphilis: a common bacterial infection; first symptoms appear between 1 – 4 weeks after infection. Syphilis can be treated with antibiotics in tablet form or penicillin injections. If it is not treated, Syphilis can cause serious conditions such as stroke and paralysis.
HIV/AIDS: the most serious conditions of all sexually transmitted diseases and STDs. This virus attacks the body's immune system and can, at worst, be terminal. Ongoing treatment must be used to prevent this problem from rapidly deteriorating your health.
Simple measures can be taken to reduce the risk of catching sexually transmitted diseases; if you think you're at risk of STDs consider having a check-up at a sexual health clinic once every few months. Once diagnosed with an STD, it's important to wait until the doctor gives you the 'all clear' before you have sex again.
