Mercilon works to prevent pregnancy in three ways. First, the pill’s synthetic versions of oestrogen (ethinylestradiol) and progesterone (desogestrel) trick the body into thinking that an egg has already been released from the ovaries. This stops eggs being released and fertilized by a male sperm. Mercilon also thickens cervical fluid, causing difficultly for sperm trying to reach the womb. • History of jaundice, severe itching, otosclerosis, or pemphigoid gestationis during a previous pregnancy, or previous use of sex hormones.
• Porphyrias.
