How does it work?

It works by targeting the bacteria that is causing the infection and inhibiting its ability to replicate and spread. This gives your natural antibodies more time to fight the infection effectively. In most cases the infection will be completely cured, but it’s important to continue to take the treatment even if the symptoms disappear.

Can anyone take Metronidazole?

It is generally considered a safe medication, although some people may be hypersensitive to other nitroimidazoles, in which case they are advised to consult a doctor for alternative medication.

It is also not usually prescribed to elderly people or anyone with a liver condition or a disease of the central nervous system or blood cells. Some medications cannot be taken in conjunction with Metronidazole, so it is important to mention anything else you are taking, including online contraceptives, during your consultation.

How do you take the medication?

Your prescribed dosage will depend on which infection you have been prescribed the antibiotic to treat. Metronidazole is usually taken in doses of 400mg, and in most cases only one tablet per day is required for a period of seven to ten days. Sometimes, a one-off dose of 2000mg (five 400mg tablets) is prescribed to people who tolerate the drug well.

It should be taken during or after meals and you should avoid alcohol for the duration of the course.

Are there any side effects?

Metronidazole doesn’t usually cause side effects, however some people may be less tolerant of the medication and suffer some adverse reactions such as an unpleasant taste in the mouth, appetite loss, dizziness, headaches or digestive problems including diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting.

If you experience any more serious or persistent side effects you should inform your doctor, as you may be hypersensitive to this antibiotic.
