Microgynon contains two types of artificial female hormones, which are called ethinylestradiol and levonorgestrel. The compound of artificial hormones within the Microgynon birth control pill stop you from getting pregnant, just as your natural hormones would stop you conceiving again when you are already pregnant. They work by:

• Preventing an egg from being released for fertilisation by a sperm
• Thickening the fluid in the neck of your womb, making it tough for sperm to reach it
• Thinning the lining of your womb so it is not thicken enough for an egg to grow there.

If this is your first time using Microgynon or you are starting this pill again after a break, take your first Microgynon pill on the first day of bleeding of your next period. The pills are marked clearly on the pack to indicate how many you have left and when to take them. For instance, if your period starts on a Tuesday, start with a pill marked Tue. Continue taking one pill per day until all 12 pills have been used.

You can also start taking Microgynon at a later stage of your menstrual cycle if you are beyond reasonable doubt that that you are not pregnant. However, delaying the start date means that you won't be protected from pregnancy straight away. For full protection, use a condom during sex for the next seven days.

The majority of women aged 18 and above can use the Microgynon birth control pill, however women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are the main exceptions to this rule. As with all prescription medications there are certain precautions to bear in mind, for instance, another prescribed treatment or an existing health condition may preclude you from obtaining Microgynon.

There are other reasons why a doctor may not write you a prescription for this pill, if you have recently experienced unexplained vaginal bleeding, have a history of circulation problems, heart problems or stroke.

If you are using an oral contraceptive for the first time, you may experience some mild side effects that include:

• Nausea or vomiting
• Headache or migraine
• Breast tenderness or enlargement
• Weight changes
• Water retention
• Vaginal thrush
• A change in menstrual bleeding.

Fortunately, these adverse effects usually settle after a few days of taking this pill. If they persist, contact your doctor as soon as possible.
