Men on dialysis likely to develop erection problems, says new study

renal treatment can worsen erection problems

As reported by Renal & Urology News, a new study finds that men on haemodialysis are at high risk of developing erectile dysfunction, compared to men with a fully functional liver.

Spearheaded by Prof Giovanni F. M. Strippoli of Diaverum, one of the world’s largest kidney treatment facilities, a team of urologists screened 946 men undergoing haemodialysis for signs of erection problems, notes Renal & Urology News. 83% of those surveyed said they experienced mild to moderate erection problems, while 47% of the participants reported severe impotence.

As of now, it is the biggest study to look into the possible link between haemodialysis and erectile dysfunction, lead study author Prof Strippoli confirms, saying that the subjects belonged to diverse demographics and were carefully picked up from haemodialysis treatment facilities worldwide.

Citing the inference drawn by the researchers, the New York-based medical news portal says men on haemodialysis had a significantly higher risk of developing erectile dysfunction compared to those without liver complications.

Noting that about 10-40% men in general population face the risk of suffering from impotence, the study authors insisted that those receiving dialysis should be periodically tested for erection problems, says Renal & Urology News.

And the most concerning part of the study is that those who undergo renal treatment do not often respond well to impotence treatment, the study associates note, revealing that 41 out of 100 men with chronic liver issues and erectile dysfunction do not usually seek sexual health treatments.
