In her first interview since her well-publicised divorce from golfing legend Tiger Woods, Elin Nordegren revealed that she suffered from hair loss due to stress.

The former model and mother of 2 has been under an incredible amount of stress since the details of her former husband’s infidelity made worldwide headlines at the end of last year. During the last 9 months the 30 year old has suffered from weight loss, as well as the loss of her hair.

Losing hair as a result of stress is actually very common. This type of hair loss is usually known as Telogen Effluvium, but stress can also relate to alopecia areata. Millions of people suffer from these conditions. In fact, 1 in 2 men, and 1 in 3 women, are affected by hair loss at a point in their lives.

Grow new hair

“Here you have a perfectly healthy, young woman who has been under a great deal of stress. Her body reacted by creating a hormonal imbalance that triggered insomnia, weight loss and hair loss” said hair loss expert Dr Larry Shapiro. “The good news is that anyone experiencing this type of hair loss can reverse their situation rather quickly if they provide the nutrients the body needs to stimulate the follicles to grow new hair.”

Stress can cause an imbalance in hormones which in turn results in baldness. There are a number of baldness treatments, such as Propecia, that can be used to combat hair loss for male pattern baldness. “Many of the FDA approved drug treatments for hair loss specifically target and block DHT receptors that cause hair to fall out” said Dr Shapiro.

Anybody who is worried about hair loss is advised to consult a doctor to discuss any issues and baldness cures.
