exercise benefits male sexual health

A new study conducted at Emory University suggests that increased exercise results in improved erectile function in men aged 40 years or less.

For the purpose of study, researchers evaluated the association between physical activity and erectile function in healthy men aged 18 to 40. Participants were asked to take two surveys, namely the Paffenbarger Physical Activity Questionnaire and the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF).

To determine whether participants led a sedentary or active lifestyle they were asked to fill the Paffenburger Physical Activity Questionnaire that translated physical activity reported by the participant into weekly energy expenditure. Study authors measured the erectile function of participants by evaluating the IIEF survey.

The study was published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that men who exercised more have enhanced sexual function, while sedentary men under 40 showed higher rates of erectile dysfunction.

Citing the findings of the research, Wayland Hsiao, MD, co-author of the study and assistant professor of urology at the Emory University School of Medicine said men who exercise more than others are more likely to experience protective benefits against impotence.

He further added that early screening for erectile dysfunction can help motivate young men to adopt a healthy lifestyle, which will in turn help them avoid health issues like diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Explaining the purpose behind the study, Chad W.M. Ritenour, MD, director of the Emory’s Men’s Health Center and associate professor of urology said the main aim of the study was to find a link between exercise and erectile function in men.
