Influenza expert Robert Webster has urged the world’s health organisations to remain vigilant in the face of further flu epidemics.
Last month the World Health Organisation declared that the Swine Flu pandemic was officially over. Many people have welcomed the news, but a number of health experts are warning health bodies all around the world to be watchful for future outbreaks.
Problem
Mr Webster, who is chairman of the virology and molecular biology department at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, has highlighted bird flu as a possible threat to the world. Mr Webster has warned that the end of swine flu doesn’t mean the end of other possible pandemics. “We may think we can relax and influenza is no longer a problem. I want to assure you that that is not the case” he said.
His claim has been given further importance due to a new case of avian influenza that is being reported in Egypt. A 33 year old woman from Qaluibia governorate was diagnosed with the human form of the flu last month. Just 9 days after symptoms developed, the woman unfortunately passed away. It has been indicated that the woman was exposed to sick poultry before her death.
Pandemic
The global reaction to the swine flu pandemic has been met with much criticism from certain parts. The availability and distribution of vaccines has caused much controversy. In some countries, many were able to receive vaccines, whilst in others treatments had to be destroyed in huge numbers due to them expiring.
There still remain many medications that can help people to combat the dangers of influenza. Anybody who is worried about swine flu, bird flu, or any issues concerning influenza, are advised to seek medical help to receive appropriate information and advice.
