The French view British people as old-fashioned and obese, a survey by Renault says.
The poll questioned 4,000 French and English people. Participants were asked their views of the other culture. French people most associated “Britishness” with old men on mobility scooters, flat caps, processed cheese and cups of tea. British people saw the French as unaccepting of other cultures and no good in wars.
Processed cheese, which can contain trans fats, only accounts for a small amount of Britain’s cheese sales. The nation’s favourite cheese is cheddar. Each year, the average French person consumes twice as much cheese as a typical British person.
However, French people are in better shape than the British. The World Health Organisation reports that almost 17% of French adults are obese. In Britain the adult obesity level is 23%.
In 2007, the University of Plymouth compared French and British eating habits. French people used raw cooking ingredients more regularly. They also routinely ate 3 meals a day. The British relied more on takeaways and quick snacks. Only 6% of French people ate crisps often, whereas 60% of British did.
Cultural tension?
"Cultural idiosyncrasies are what we often use to draw conclusions about the collective personality of a nation," psychologist Dr. Linda Papadopoulos explained. Renault has previously come under fire for causing cultural tension but insists that its intentions are wholly “light-hearted.”
Overcoming obesity
The best way to overcome obesity is to exercise regularly and eat a nutritious diet. Nutritionists say the healthiest diets incorporate green vegetables, salad, carbohydrates and meats. In terms of meat, lean meat such as chicken is better for you than red meat. If you would like to lose weight, consult with your doctor. Many dieters find it beneficial to join a weight loss support group.
