Official figures show that as many as 90% of the UK population are oblivious as to what visceral fat actually is. However, more than 2 thirds claimed that they felt more motivated after learning of the serious health risks associated with it.
In response, experts from the National Obesity Forum have expressed their concerns over a real need for greater public awareness for this type of fat, responsible for coating the abdominal organs, which can increase the threat of potentially fatal diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
They have also called for us to ensure we take a balanced diet, whilst avoiding new fangled diets. Other experts feel we are in desperate need of education concerning the dangers of visceral fat and a need for safe, gradual weight loss.
“Fad diets, which usually promise quick fix weight loss, are unsustainable. They can actually do more harm than good.Invariably weight is put back on, with some of the weight regained accumulating as visceral fat”, claims Professor David Haslam, Chairman of the organisation.
The news is crucial given that around two thirds of women and half of all men are currently obese, according to official studies carried out by the NHS. This survey involved some 2,000 adults, all of whom were UK residents. Conducted by GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare, the study also found that as many as 64% of us are due to embark on a weight loss regime this year. However, when referring to stats from previous years, 84% of us are due to fail in our attempts.
In addition to this, 4 million are said to be looking to give up alcohol for the New Year in an attempt to curb their weight and improve their overall health. However, 1 in 5 of these people are said to already be aware that their health plans will fail come February.
