Health Experts call for World War II rationing

Whilst we are already fighting a war against an obesity pandemic that is fast becoming global, health experts are now questioning whether we should bring back World War II style rationing in a bid to cure over indulgence.

With a number of commentators now comparing modern obesity with the healthier 1940s, where a government scheme saw basic amenities restricted, on items such as bread, milk, butter, cheese and meat, many people now feel that the system that once encompassed a ration book should be replicated in modern society.

The scheme was imposed by Lord Woolton, a supermarket boss who was drafted in as Food Minister. His Specially formed PR department was also far more successful in educating the population about the importance of a healthy diet, creating characters such as Dr Carrot and Potato Pete. Although patronising by modern standards, the educational focus of the department was successful and unlike today, people paid heed to government schemes.

Society today

It’s fair to say that things have changed direction dramatically, with health experts now calling for us as a nation to curb our indulgence and to eat less. However, we are able to draw some parallels. Famous Author; Phillip Pullman was reported to have told the media that he would be all for World war II style rationing, if it were to make any headway at all to improve our health as a nation.

The jury is out on this one however, with many experts believing that we in the UK, will not take to any type of rationing scheme. In relation, TV Chef, and former advisor to the Ministry of Food during the war, feels that rationing isn’t the answer, commenting: “There is no point in bringing back rationing, but there is in bringing back healthy eating and bringing back 'no waste'. That was one of the golden rules”-BBC, 09.

To date, 32% of men and 29% of women are obese and with more and more children being diagnosed as obese before schooling age, many people believe it is time for action.

In relation, anybody suffering with a weight condition can see their doctor who will be able to prescribe treatments such as Reductil and Xenical if they deem you to be eligible.
