Latest research has hinted at a surprising health benefit of watermelon, saying that it can work as a natural alternative to erectile dysfunction treatment Viagra.

While watermelon has traditionally been seen as a natural vasodilator and libido enhancer, the new study reaffirms its potential as a potency fruit. A team of researchers from the Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Centre in Texas, Arizona found to their delight that some of the ingredients in watermelon can have the same impact on male sexual health as Viagra.

"The more we study watermelons, the more we realise just how amazing a fruit it is in providing natural enhancers to the human body", lead study author Dr Patel observes, adding that each study adds something new to the long list of health benefits of watermelon.

A nutrient called citrulline, which is present in abundance in watermelon, can dilate blood vessels to enhance blood flow to the penis, the study authors say, adding that the fruit also contains high amounts of phyto-nutrients that are essential for the well-being of the human body.

According to the researchers, citrulline can also improve cardiovascular health and boost immunity by converting itself to arginine. This amino acid can help resolve problems with penile blood flow – a factor often found to be the most common physical risk factor for erectile dysfunction. Viagra is known to treat erection problems by enhancing blood flow to the chambers of the penis.
