Dr Ekpi Philips, a consultant gynaecologist, in an interview to Vanguard, a Nigerian newspaper, said that both mental and physical factors are responsible for sexual problems in women.
Elaborating the reasons behind dying sexual desire in some women, the medic told the daily newspaper that problematic relationship, peer pressure and socio-cultural influences are some of the factors that cause female sexual dysfunction (FSD).
He further blames issues like childbirth, depression and partner’s incapability to performance in bed for lack of sex drive in women, notes the tabloid. Orgasm problems in women can also be caused by medical issues such as, endometriosis, fibroids and thyroid disorders, says the doctor.
Vanguard learns that a dip in natural testosterone levels can hamper libido in both men and women. Certain medications like oral contraceptives, antidepressants and blood pressure lowering drugs also affect orgasm in women.
Explaining the link between testosterone and sexual function, Dr Ekpi Philips tells Vanguard that testosterone level in women drops with age and affects her sexual desire. He also points out financial burdens, job stress and hormone disorders as the potential causes of female sexual problems.
Billed as hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in medical terms, loss of sexual desire in women cannot be just treated by medications, says the gynaecologist. Advising testosterone therapy for treatment of FSD, doctor explains that the therapy restores testosterone levels to normal, which in turns boosts the sexual desire.
Postmenopausal women, who usually suffer from orgasm disorder due to vaginal dryness, are advised to use vaginal oestrogen cream. It may be noted that Intrinsa is one of the most popular testosterone patches that is used by women suffering from female sexual dysfunction to awaken their sexual desire.
