Obesity linked to Cancer

Obesity and cancer

Official figures released by the American Institute for Cancer Research appear to indicate that over 10,000 deaths will be recorded in the coming 12 months, as a direct result of the increasing levels of obesity. The authority behind the investigation set out to identify the direct links between diet and disease. They found that 49% of endometrial cancers (of the womb) and 35% of oesophageal were linked with weight conditions.

Cancer Research representative, Laureb Kolonel claims : “It's clearer than ever that obesity's impact is felt before, during and after cancer, it increases risk, makes treatment more difficult and shortens survival” – APPF,09. Experts have long debated a link between the two conditions. One common explanation is that a build of fatty tissue in the body, can potentially lead to the development of cancer in the body. Excess fat can also lead to weaker immune systems.

What the figures say

34% of American adults are deemed to obese in medical terms. This is from aged 20 upwards. If figures prove to be consistent then the number of people with terminal cancer is undoubtedly set to rise.

UK pharmacists must take responsibility

UK pharmacists will soon be forced to prove their claims that the increasing selection of ‘lotions and potions’ that we see over the counter, actually work. Thus far, chemists have never had to prove anything in terms of the so called solutions they claim to offer.

This initiative also brings attention to the fact that society is in need of better education concerning obesity and the ever increasing threat to health.
