Prince says playing guitar has stopped him going bald

Celebrities notoriously age gracefully. In fact, some stars seem to look younger the older they become! Prince is certainly one of these evergreen household names. A journalist recently proclaimed that that 52 year old looks like he’s 25. One of the most notable aspects of the rock star’s appearance is his thick head of hair, and he has revealed in an interview how he has managed to avoid hair loss. The secret? Playing the guitar.

The multi-talented musician shot to fame in the late 70s and has managed to maintain his popularity for decades since. His long and extremely successful career has consisted of many evolutions. Not only has he experimented with his music, but also with his name. One thing that he has maintained throughout, though, is his appearance, which remains as youthful as ever.

In the interview with the newspaper The Mirror, the Purple Rain singer states that “playing the electric guitar your whole life does something to you, I’m convinced that all that electricity racing through your body made me keep my hair”. He also states that his hair is a useful was for him to avoid being recognised: “My hair is capable of doing a lot of different things, I don’t always look like this”.

We decided to take a look at some older electric guitar players to find out whether any of them have experienced any hair loss. The electric guitar does seem to conjure up images of long hair being waved about and many of Prince’s fellow middle aged rock stars seem to prove his theory correct. Stars such as Eddie Van Halen (56), Brian May (63), ‘Slash’ (45), and Richie Sambora (52) have all seemed to avoid baldness.

After further research though, we discovered that many electric guitarists are in fact bald and indeed electric guitar is not a miracle cure. We would advise people to stick to more conventional, if a little less fun, treatments for combating hair loss.
