A reveller at the Scottish music festival T in the Park was discovered to be in possession of a Viagra tablet, alongside five bags of cocaine with a value of nearly £5,000.
Gary Hume, 29, was arrested by police as he arrived at the festival last July following an anonymous tip off that led them to swoop on his caravan. The criminal appeared in court yesterday to face up to the charges and claimed that a Chinese drug dealer had accidentally given him the drugs, which he believed were worth £200. His version of the story was rejected and Hume will now have to wait to see how much jail time he faces, as his sentencing has been deferred.
Whether or not Hume had planned to use the Viagra personally or to sell it on to a festival-goer is uncertain. Festival campsites are well-known to be places where young people meet, drink and take drugs, and in this environment it is easy to understand that some revellers might want to purchase Viagra. The drug is sometimes acquired as a means of increasing sexual stamina rather than treating impotence and this usage of the drug has been strongly discouraged by doctors. Perhaps Hume really was affected by erectile dysfunction and needed the drug for this reason?
We can only speculate but we can say for certain this case is that it brings to mind the recent news that Peaches Geldof put Viagra on a drug ‘shopping list’, which she and a friend had created to plan for a night out. This was another situation where Viagra was listed alongside illegal drugs in a fashion that suggested recreational drug use.
