Weight loss helps sleep disorders

Health bods have recently identified a link between weight loss and the successful treatment of sleep disorders like Obstructive sleep apnea. OSA is a condition that can cause the upper airway to collapse during sleep. Symptoms of the condition include breathing difficulties and each episode can in fact last for up to 10 seconds.

More serious cases are frequently linked with vehicular crashes and heart disease. Further research has also found it to be closely linked with obesity. Research, conducted at the Karolinksa Institute in Sweden has prompted experts to evaluate whether low energy diets work to treat the condition in obese men.

The research involved 63 males, all of whom had been diagnosed as obese. They ranged between 30-65 and all suffered with moderate – serve OSA. The patients were also subject to treatment, using continuous airway pressure.

30 of the men were placed on a very low energy, liquid diet for 7 weeks. The same patients were then moved on to normal food dosages, 7 days later. The other half of the group were asked to maintain their original diets throughout the study.

The results would appear to indicate that patients who were giving the liquid diet, were able to lose an average of 18.7kg over a per 9 week period whilst the subjects who maintained their diet, lost just 1.1kg. This is a clear indication that low energy diets are effective for weight loss. By the end of the study, over three fourths of patients lost enough weight to bring them back under the obese bracket, into the overweight category.

The research also indicated that low energy diets, sufficed to reduce the cases of sleep apnea in obese men, having the greater success with more severe cases. Obesity effects a staggering high proportion of the population and as such, more needs to be done in order to educate the population of the long terms health risks.
