Propecia (Finasteride) Information
Propecia Finasteride is an oral treatment for male pattern baldness which is also known as androgenetic alopecia, now available on private prescription in the UK. Propecia is a prescription drug and should be taken only after medical consultation. Propecia Finasteride has been manufactured by pharmaceutical company Merck. Proven under several clinical trials, Propecia (Finasteride) works in a very safe manner for male pattern baldness.
Propecia has been proven to be effective in the prevention of further hair loss, and has also been known to promote some degree of hair re-growth. In addition, Propecia Finasteride has been shown to prolong, and in some cases, halt the process of hair loss in as many as 80% of participants. Moreover, although there are a host of non-prescription treatments available to date, Propecia is the only treatment, subject to a valid prescription
Propecia (Finasteride) works by inhibiting the action of an enzyme in the body called type II 5-alpha reductase. Male Pattern Baldness occurs due to production of male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Type II 5-alpha reductase enzyme is responsible for converting the male hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. Finasteride in Propecia inhibits action of this enzyme. DHT is a hormone that can damage hair follicles and lead to hair loss in men who are genetically sensitive to it. Propecia works in the body by specifically lowering the levels of DHT in the scalp. To prevent further hair loss, sooner you start taking propecia the better it will be.
Propecia works only in men with pattern baldness. Women are strongly advised to refrain from administering Propecia, as it has been designed for the use of males who are suffering from male pattern baldness. It does not help men who have lost hair due to chemotherapy or other medical reasons. Propecia is also not recommended for cancer patients.
