Propecia (Finasteride)

Propecia Finasteride is an oral treatment for male pattern baldness which is also known as androgenetic alopecia, now available on private prescription in the UK. Propecia works by inhibiting the action of an enzyme in the body called type II 5-alpha reductase. Male Pattern Baldness occurs due to production of male hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Type II 5-alpha reductase enzyme is responsible for converting the male hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone. DHT is a hormone that can damage hair follicles and lead to hair loss in men who are genetically sensitive to it. Propecia works in the body by specifically lowering the levels of DHT in the scalp.

Propecia works only in men with pattern baldness. It does not help men who have lost hair due to chemotherapy or other medical reasons. Propecia is also not recommended for cancer patients.
