Sildenafil, marketed under the brand name Viagra, is a drug manufactured by Pfizer. Launched in 1998, Sildenafil Citrate became the favoured prescription option for treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) owing to its effectiveness and success.
It belongs to a family of medications known as PDE5 inhibitors. It selectively inhibits the action of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) specific phosphodiesterase type 5, which is responsible for the degradation of cGMP in the chambers of the penis known as corpus cavernosum. When sexual stimulation takes place, an increase in levels of cGMP leads to a relaxation of the smooth muscles which improves the blood flow to the penis. This is the biological process that leads to an erection. A person suffering from erectile dysfunction is unable to experience or maintain a long lasting erection owing to a decrease in blood flow to the penile region. Taking this medication blocks the action of PDE5, which allows the formation of more cGMP, which in turn results in firmer, longer lasting erections.
This medication is available in dosage strengths of 25mg, 50mg and 100mg and the pill is blue in colour. This is why it is commonly referred to as the ‘blue pill’. It’s an oral medication and should be taken with a glass of water, an hour before sexual activity. The effects of sildenafil citrate last for around 4 hours but, remember that it does not work without sexual stimulation. Typically, doctors recommend a dosage of 50mg of sildenafil, but a 25mg dosage is prescribed to men who are older than 65 years of age. A low dosage is also prescribed to men who suffer from kidney or liver problems.
This medication has an excellent safety profile but there are certain precautions and side effects that everyone who is thinking about using it should know about. For example, you will not be prescribed sildenafil if you are taking certain medications, like nitroglycerin. Such medications have nitrates in them, which cause serious contraindications with sildenafil citrate.
