Yasmin is a monophasic pill meaning that each tablet has the same dose of hormones in it.

The two active ingredients, ethinylestradiol and drospirenone, are synthetic versions of the naturally occurring female sex hormones, oestrogen and progesterone. Together, they work to stop conception by overriding the menstrual cycle. This is achieved in three ways: by stopping an egg from being released for fertilisation; thickening the cervical mucus to prevent sperm from entering the womb; and altering the consistency of the lining of the womb so an egg can not implant itself there.

Take one Yasmin pill on the first day of your period for immediate contraceptive protection. Continue to take one pill per day. Complete each strip of pills until day 21, when you will have a seven day break. After this short break resume the cycle by starting a new pack of pills.

If you start using Yasmin between day two and five of your period you will also need to use to also use a barrier form of contraceptive to ensure against pregnancy. The additional preventive measure should be taken for at least seven days.

Please note that the Yasmin pill may not be as effective if one or more pills are missed per pack. To avoid missing a dosage, try to get into a habit of taking a Yasmin pill at the same time each day, preferably at bedtime.

Side effects of Yasmin are minimal; if you are using the Yasmin contraceptive pill for the first time you may experience some mild side effects, because your body isn’t used to the active ingredients used in this medication.

The most common side effects produced by the Yasmin pill are: headache, menstrual changes, breast pain, abdominal pain and nausea. These adverse effects are known to affect only a small number of users, and disappear within a couple of days.
